The biggest gainers in the Sensex pack were Sun Pharma, Bajaj Finance, Vedanta, Yes Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Tata Motors, HCL Tech, IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank, rising up to 2.98 per cent.
State owned banks SBI and PNB were the top Nifty gainers along with ICICI Bank and auto shares.
From the Sensex pack, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finserv, State Bank of India, Tata Motors, ITC, Power Grid and Larsen & Toubro were the biggest gainers. IndusInd Bank climbed 2 per cent after the company on Tuesday reported a 30 per cent jump in consolidated net profit in April-June quarter at Rs 2,124.50 crore, helped by core income growth and lower bad loan provisions.
Sentiment was largely positive after April IIP grew at 4.9 per cent, spurred by higher growth in manufacturing and mining sectors.
Nestle was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding over 2 per cent, followed by Maruti, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Auto, TCS and L&T. NSE Nifty slipped 8.60 points to 17,353.50.
Maruti, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, Ranbaxy, Dr Reddy's, ONGC, Hindalco, Reliance, HLL, ITC up. BPCL, ICI India and Kotak Bank dip.
On BSE, 1,826 shares declined and 982 shares rose, while a total of 194 shares were unchanged

After paring some gains, the 30-share index settled at an all-time closing high of 28,008.90, up by 98.84 points, or 0.35 per cent, over the previous close.
In the broader market, BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap indices mirrored the gains in headline indices and rose 1% and 0.9% respectively.
In the Sensex pack, Bharti Airtel was the top performer, surging 4.61%. Other gainers included ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, L&T, Sun Pharma, RIL, HDFC duo, Tata Motors and M&M -- climbing up to 3.69%.
